Kids between 8 and 14 are, weirdly, the easiest passengers on a coach tour. Younger than 8 and the daily structure is too much. Older than 14 and they roll their eyes at the included dinner. Right in the middle, they're old enough to retain the history, young enough to be genuinely impressed by it, and just hungry enough to eat whatever's on the table.
If you've got kids in this band, here's which Europamundo routes consistently work, and which to skip.
1. Italian Wonder (10 days)
Rome, Florence, Venice with stops in Pisa and Assisi. The kids will recognise the Colosseum from every movie they've watched. Venice is unforgettable. Florence has gelato every fifty metres. Pace is steady, hotels are central, walking distances are manageable.
Where it gets hard: museum days. Plan a "two-hour-max" rule for the Vatican Museums and let the family vote which two hours. Pre-book the Uffizi tickets.
2. Iberian Sun (12 days, Spain + Portugal)
Madrid, Lisbon, Seville, Granada, Toledo. The kids will eat, Spanish and Portuguese food is family-friendly and the late dinner hours mean siesta-style afternoons. Flamenco evening as an optional. Beaches near several stops if your route includes the Costa del Sol.
3. Northern Europe Highlights (10 days)
Amsterdam, Brussels, Cologne, Paris. Short distances between cities, fairy-tale castles, canals, the Eiffel Tower at night. Easier on younger kids in this band because the cities are walkable and the language barrier is low.
4. Greek Highlights with islands
Athens plus a few-day cruise. Kids love the islands, the swimming, the ferries. The Acropolis is genuinely awe-inspiring for kids who've done any Greek myth at school.
What to avoid
Grand Tours longer than 16 days. Eastern European combos with four countries in 10 days. Anything that involves five-hour coach days back-to-back. Tours that include the Auschwitz visit (this is a heavy day even for adults; we don't recommend it for under-14s).
Practical tips for families
- Pack one small entertainment bag per kid (books, drawing kit, downloaded shows). The coach has wifi, but it's slow.
- Bring earphones, the optional audio commentary on the coach is excellent but useless without headphones.
- Don't over-pack outfits. Kids wear the same three t-shirts on holiday.
- A snack stash for early evenings before included dinners. Children melt down at 17:30 in every European country.
- Currency: get the kids each their own €40 wallet for personal spending. They learn money fast.
Pricing
Europamundo gives child discounts of 10 to 20% on most tours when sharing with two adults. A family of four for a 10-day Italian Wonder lands around R75,000 to R90,000 land only. Add flights from JHB/CPT (around R12,000 to R18,000 per person), and you're at roughly R130,000 all in for the family.
How to book
Book at least four months ahead to give Schengen visa applications enough breathing room (10 to 12 weeks at the moment, read our 2026 visa guide first). Comprehensive family travel insurance from an SA provider is mandatory.
