Europamundo tours start in European cities, Madrid, Rome, Paris, London, Lisbon, depending on the route. We don't book your flights. But we should help you understand the options, because the flight choice has a real impact on how your tour starts.
Here's the lay of the land for getting from Johannesburg or Cape Town to your tour's start point in 2026.
The three flight categories
1. Direct flights
JHB to Frankfurt (Lufthansa) and JHB to London Heathrow (BA, Virgin Atlantic) are the main direct options. JHB-Paris is also available on Air France for parts of the year. Flight time: 11 to 12 hours.
Pros: no connection, no missed luggage, one-leg simplicity.
Cons: more expensive (typically R18,000 to R28,000 economy return), limited city options.
2. One-stop via the Gulf
Emirates (via Dubai), Qatar Airways (via Doha), Etihad (via Abu Dhabi). The standard SA-to-Europe route. Connects to almost every major European city.
Pros: cheaper (R12,000 to R18,000 typically), more route options, often newer aircraft.
Cons: 16 to 22 hours total travel time including layover, jetlag is worse.
3. One-stop via Africa or Asia
Ethiopian Airlines (via Addis Ababa) is one of the cheapest options on the route, sometimes R10,000 to R13,000. Turkish Airlines (via Istanbul) is excellent value with a great network. Singapore Airlines (via Singapore) is the long way around but quality is exceptional.
Pros: often the cheapest option, excellent service on Turkish and Singapore.
Cons: longer total time, less popular layover cities.
From Cape Town specifically
CPT has fewer direct options. Most CPT travellers either:
- Connect via JHB on a domestic flight (adds 2 hours each way)
- Fly direct from CPT to Doha (Qatar), Dubai (Emirates), Istanbul (Turkish), or Addis Ababa (Ethiopian)
- Use British Airways' direct CPT-London route for tours starting in the UK or Europe via London
Booking timing
For European tours in May-September, book flights 4 to 5 months ahead for best prices. December-February tours: book in September-October. Last-minute (under 2 months out) almost always means premium prices.
What we recommend
For tours starting in Spain, Portugal, Italy, France: fly into the city where your tour starts a day early, give yourself 24 hours to settle in, and meet the group rested. The extra hotel night costs R1,500 to R2,500 and is worth every cent.
For tours starting in Eastern Europe: same logic but connect via Istanbul or Frankfurt for the best routing.
The luggage question
Most carriers allow 23kg checked + 7 to 8kg carry-on for economy. Emirates and Qatar are slightly more generous (30kg checked on some fares). Coach tours have luggage limits too, Europamundo's is one medium suitcase plus a small carry-on. Don't overpack.
Premium economy vs economy
On 11+ hour flights, premium economy (R8,000 to R15,000 above economy) is genuinely worth it if budget allows. Better seats, better food, less jetlag on arrival. Business class (R45,000+ extra) is debatable, you sleep flat but you still arrive needing a shower.
Travel insurance, already covered

The departure day routine
- Arrive at JHB or CPT 3 hours before international departure
- Bring your printed Europamundo voucher (the visa officer at passport control may ask)
- Carry your visa-required travel insurance certificate in your carry-on
- Pack one change of clothes and any medication in your carry-on in case checked luggage is delayed
- Power adapter, headphones, lip balm, ID, in your day bag
