The Rhine has been Europe's main commercial highway for two thousand years. The Romans built forts along it. The medieval lords built castles on every promontory above it. Today, the same river takes river-cruise passengers through some of the prettiest landscape in continental Europe, and you do the whole trip without packing or unpacking once.
Why river cruising works
The fundamental advantage is the single-hotel format. Your boat is your hotel. You wake up moored in a new town every morning, walk off, take the guided tour, come back for a long lunch on the sun deck, walk into the same town in the afternoon, and sleep as the boat moves to the next stop overnight. No bus transfers between hotels. No suitcases to lift. No early-morning packing.
This format suits travellers who want to see places but don't want the daily logistics. It's particularly good for older travellers and couples celebrating a milestone.
The standard Rhine route
The classic itinerary runs Amsterdam to Basel (or the reverse), taking 7 to 9 nights. Highlights along the way:
- Cologne, the towering gothic cathedral, right on the riverside
- Koblenz, the dramatic confluence of the Rhine and Moselle
- The Middle Rhine Gorge, the most-photographed section, with castles on every cliff
- Rüdesheim, the wine town with the famous Drosselgasse lane
- Heidelberg, Germany's oldest university town
- Strasbourg, the medieval French-German border city
- Basel, the Swiss arrival point at the river's southern end
The most scenic stretch is the Rhine Gorge between Koblenz and Rüdesheim, about 65km of cliff-castles, vineyards, and tight river bends. You'll spend a full afternoon on the sun deck just watching this go past.
What's on board
Europamundo's Rhine partners run modern river ships, generally 130 to 190 passengers. You'll find one or two restaurants, a lounge with a bar, a small sun deck (sometimes with a pool), a panoramic observation lounge, and well-appointed cabins. Most cabins have French balconies (floor-to-ceiling windows that slide open), worth paying for.
Meals are full-board on every cruise we book. Breakfast and lunch are buffet-style; dinner is served. Drinks at lunch and dinner are usually included on the European boats. Coffee, tea, and snacks are available all day.
The shore excursions
Each port stop includes a guided walking tour. Optional excursions are bookable on board, a wine tasting in Rüdesheim, a Black Forest day from Strasbourg, the famous Lorelei Rock viewpoint. These run as supplements, paid in Euro on the day. Budget roughly EUR 50 to 80 per optional excursion.
Who river cruising suits
If you've done classic coach tours and want something gentler, this is the next step. The pace is slower. The walking is moderate (city tours are 90 to 120 minutes, mostly on flat ground). The food is generous. The dress code is smart-casual, one jacket for the captain's dinner is the dressiest it gets.
It particularly suits: couples on milestone anniversaries, three-generation family trips (the boat has range), solo travellers who want to meet others without being on a coach all day, and anyone with mobility considerations who wants a stable, accessible base.
South African logistics
Flights from JHB or CT route into Amsterdam (KLM, Lufthansa via Frankfurt, Emirates via Dubai). Schengen visa required, same 10-to-12-week lead time. Tours run March through November, with peak demand in May to June and September to October when the weather is best and the river is at full flow.
Prices in Rands include the cruise, all meals, port charges, and the guided shore tours. Optional excursions, drinks outside meal times, and gratuities (usually paid as a per-day amount in EUR at the end) are extra. Ask us for the all-in budget for your departure.
When the river runs low
A note worth knowing: in the late summer of drought years, the Rhine can drop low enough that some cruise sections substitute with coach transfers for a day or two. The cruise still runs. The itinerary still completes. But for one or two stretches, you'll be on a bus. Europamundo's partners absorb this and communicate well, and it's rare. Worth knowing it exists.
