Collette is one of the oldest names in guided touring, family-owned, US-based, founded in 1918. They have built a real reputation for smaller groups, longer included experiences, and a slower, more curated pace. Europamundo is at the other end of the model: a Madrid-based volume operator running over 1,000 itineraries across Europe with bigger coaches and tighter pricing. Different philosophies, both legitimate.

Two very different operators
Collette is still owned by the Sullivan family in Rhode Island. The brand has leaned hard into "Explorations" (their small-group sub-product that caps groups at around 19 to 24 travellers) alongside their classic tours which run closer to 38. Their pricing is squarely in the premium bracket. A 10-day Italy circuit will typically land between R55k and R80k per person land-only, depending on departure date and hotel category.
Europamundo sells the same destinations at roughly a third to half of that. The trade-off is real and worth understanding before you book either.
Group size, where Collette genuinely wins
This is Collette's strongest card. A Collette Explorations departure with 19 travellers feels different to a Europamundo coach with 45. You eat together at smaller restaurants, you can pivot the itinerary on the day, the guide actually learns your name and your interests, and you skip the boarding-roll-call coach culture. For some travellers (particularly older or first-time European tourers) that intimacy is worth every Rand of the premium.
Europamundo coaches are bigger, and the social mix is more international. You will have Brazilians, Mexicans, Australians, Indians, and a handful of South Africans on the same coach. That is either a feature (cultural exchange, younger energy, more interesting people) or a downside (less personal attention, less flexibility) depending on what you are after.

Pace and route density
Collette plans a 10-day Italy with deliberate breathing room. You might have a full free afternoon in Florence, a leisurely lunch built into the day, an unhurried morning before transferring. Europamundo packs more in, more cities, more highlights, less downtime. If you are visiting Europe for the first or only time, Europamundo's density makes sense (you want to see as much as possible). If you are returning and want depth over breadth, Collette's slower rhythm is better suited.
The Rand pricing question
Collette is sold in South Africa through travel agents who typically quote in US dollars and convert at the day's rate, with currency exposure right up to final payment. Europamundo, booked here, is priced and locked in Rands the moment you book. On a R60k tour, a 5% Rand move is R3,000 you did not budget for. Worth factoring in.

Which one for whom?
Choose Collette if: a smaller group genuinely matters to you, you prefer a slower pace with more depth per stop, you want higher-category hotels throughout, and you have the budget for a premium guided experience. Collette is excellent at what it does, and the Explorations product in particular is a polished small-group offering.
Choose Europamundo if: you want to see more places for less money, you are comfortable with a larger international coach, you value Rand-locked pricing, and you would rather spend the difference on extra days, a side trip, or business-class flights. The catalogue depth means you can usually find a route that fits exactly the time and budget you have.
