Johan and Elzette are a couple in their early 60s from Pretoria. They did a Trafalgar Italy tour in 2022 to celebrate their 35th wedding anniversary. They returned to Italy on a Europamundo Italian Wonder tour in February 2026, same country, similar route, very different price. They volunteered to be A/B'd for this piece.

What was the same
Johan: "The big tourist sights are the same. The Colosseum is the Colosseum. The Duomo is the Duomo. Both tours hit the must-see places. Both had excellent English-speaking guides. Both ran on time. Both had clean, comfortable coaches with reclining seats and wifi. Both included a welcome dinner and a farewell dinner. Both put us in central hotels we could walk from."
What was different
Elzette: "The Trafalgar hotels were nicer. There's no getting around that. The Rome property in 2022 had a rooftop pool, marble bathrooms, a concierge service. The Europamundo Rome hotel in 2026 was good (4-star, clean, ten-minute walk from Piazza Navona) but it wasn't luxury. If the hotel is the holiday for you, that gap matters."
Johan: "The included dinners on Trafalgar happened nearly every night. Multi-course, wine included, often at a special venue, a Tuscan farmhouse, a Venice palazzo. On Europamundo we had four or five included dinners across the two weeks. The rest of the time we ate where we wanted, which for me was actually a plus. I'd had enough of three-course set menus by day six on the Trafalgar trip."
The price gap, examined
Elzette: "R104,000 versus R58,000 for two people, both on a 12 to 14 day Italy trip. That's not a small difference. We added two extra days, saw more places, paid half as much. The Europamundo trip was R46,000 cheaper. That's a whole separate holiday for us in the future."
Johan: "Where the price went on Trafalgar: hotels, included meals, slightly smaller group. Where it didn't go: the sights themselves, which are public. We saw the same Colosseum from the same angle. The Sistine Chapel doesn't care which tour company brought you."
The group difference
Elzette: "Trafalgar was almost entirely Australians, Americans, and Brits. Average age 60+. Quiet, polite, set in their ways. Europamundo was more mixed, there were Singaporeans, an Indian family, two Mexicans, three South Africans counting us, and a young Filipino couple. Average age was probably mid-50s, but the range was wider. It was more interesting to talk to at dinner."
The Tour Director
Johan: "Both Tour Directors were excellent (different personalities. The Trafalgar guide was polished, almost performative) like a presenter on a cruise ship. He'd lined up a special evening visit to the Vatican gardens. The Europamundo guide was warmer, more conversational, ran the tour like a guide-friend-translator-fixer. He'd recommend small trattorias near the hotel. Both worked well, just different styles."
The Rand factor
Elzette: "This is the one Trafalgar can't beat. We paid Europamundo in Rands at quote, that quote held from October 2025 booking to February 2026 departure. The Rand softened by about 6% in that window. We paid exactly what we'd been quoted. Trafalgar in 2022 was Euro-denominated through the SA agent, we ended up paying R8,000 more on the final invoice than the original because of currency movement. That's not the agent's fault, just how it works."
The verdict
Both: "If you've never been to Europe, do a Trafalgar trip if you can afford it, the comfort is genuine. If you've been before, or if you want to see more for less, Europamundo is the smarter choice. For our specific situation, we'd recommend Europamundo every time now. The gap in product is real but it's not 2x the price worth of gap."
