If you've ever looked at a coach tour priced at R28,000 "from" and wondered why your solo quote came back at R39,000, you've met the single supplement. It's the one piece of tour pricing that genuinely confuses South African travellers, especially solo women over 50, who make up a large share of the people we book.
Here's how it actually works on a Europamundo tour in 2026, when it applies, when it doesn't, and what your real options are if you want to keep it down.
Why the supplement exists at all
The "from" price you see on every brochure assumes two people sharing one room. The cost the operator quotes is based on splitting the hotel rate between two travellers. If you book solo and want your own room, the operator has to charge that room to one person instead of two, and you pay roughly the room cost difference. That's the supplement.
Europamundo's single supplement is typically 30 to 40% on top of the twin-share rate. So a R28,000 tour becomes about R36,400 to R39,200 if you're travelling solo and want your own room. The supplement varies by tour because the hotel mix varies, 4-star city centre hotels carry a bigger supplement than 3-star outlying ones.
When the supplement does NOT apply
Two cases where you don't pay it (or pay less):
- GO English twin-share match. On most GO English departures, Europamundo runs a twin-share programme where two solo travellers of the same gender are matched in one room, splitting the cost. You both pay the twin-share rate. It is not guaranteed, since it depends on who else books that departure, but it works often enough to be worth asking about. Just ask us for twin share matching.
- Friends or family travelling together. Three friends in one room get a "triple share" rate (cheaper per person than twin). Two friends sharing one twin room get the standard twin-share rate. The supplement only kicks in when you're alone in a room.
GO English tours are the strongest fit for solo travellers
GO English departures run April to October. They're exclusively English-speaking groups, depart from a single passenger (no minimum group size), and have the largest concentration of South Africans, Australians and English-speaking Europeans, meaning solo travellers walk into a group where almost everyone speaks the same language. The twin-share match programme runs across most GO English tours, so the practical solo experience is: you arrive in Madrid, your TD checks the rooming list, and if there's a same-gender solo of compatible age, you share. If not, you pay the supplement. Often a same-gender solo is found and the supplement is refunded against your final invoice.
A typical solo budget in 2026
Take the 11-day Italy and Greek Islands as an example. Twin-share land-only: about R29,500. Solo with single supplement: about R39,800. Add:
- Return flights JHB to Athens: R16,500
- Schengen visa application: R1,800
- Comprehensive travel insurance (visa + cover): R2,000
- Plus Pack of optional excursions: R6,500
- Lunches/dinners (€30 x 11 days): R6,600
- Tips and personal: R2,000
Solo all-in: about R75,200. The same tour twin-share works out at roughly R65,000/pp, so the solo premium is about R10,000 across the full trip, not the R10,300 supplement on its own.
If you're a solo woman in your 50s, 60s or 70s
This is the single biggest cohort we book in South Africa.
