Spain and Portugal share a peninsula and very little else. Spanish is loud and gregarious; Portuguese is quieter and more melancholy. Spain eats dinner at 22:00; Portugal eats it at 20:00. Spanish wine is bold; Portuguese wine is structured. Together they make for one of the best two-week tours in Europe, and one of the most underrated by South African travellers.

The classic route
Most variations cover Madrid → Toledo → Cordoba → Seville → Algarve → Lisbon → Fátima → Porto → Salamanca → back to Madrid. Twelve to fourteen days. Sometimes Granada and Costa del Sol slot in for a slightly longer trip.
Madrid as the start point
Madrid is underrated. The Prado is one of the world's three best art museums (the others being the Louvre and the Uffizi). The food scene is exceptional, late-night tapas, jamón Ibérico, churros con chocolate. The city tour covers the Royal Palace, Plaza Mayor, and Puerta del Sol. Stay up late on your first evening, Madrid genuinely doesn't get going until 22:00.
Andalusia: the southern leg
Toledo is a half-day stop, medieval walled city, perfect photography. Cordoba and Seville are where the trip warms up. Seville is the highlight: the Alcázar, the cathedral, the Plaza de España, flamenco evenings as optional excursions. April is jaw-droppingly beautiful (the Feria de Sevilla). August is too hot for human enjoyment.
Crossing into Portugal
The Algarve overnight is a welcome change of pace, beaches, seafood, slow lunches. Lisbon is the real Portuguese discovery: trams, tile-clad buildings, fado music, pastel de nata. The food in Lisbon is genuinely cheaper than Spain and the quality is exceptional.
Up the spine: Fátima and Porto
Fátima is a religious pilgrimage stop, moving for some, brief for others. Porto is the surprise of the tour for many travellers: port wine cellars on the riverbank, the Lello bookshop (the one that supposedly inspired the Harry Potter library), the dramatic Douro gorge. Two nights here is worth every minute.
Back through Spain
Salamanca is one of Europe's great university cities and a perfect lunch stop on the way back. You'll arrive Madrid the evening of day 13 or 14 and fly out the next day.

It's noticeably cheaper than the equivalent Italy tour because Iberian land costs are lower. Food and drink on the ground is also cheaper, €25 will get you a serious dinner in Porto.
The flamenco question
One of the most-asked optional excursions is the Seville flamenco evening. Honest take: yes, do it. The version Europamundo books is a proper tablao (not a tourist trap) and includes tapas. About €55 per person. Worth it.
When to go
April-May is peak: warm, gardens flowering, festival season. October is the second-best window. Avoid mid-July to late August, Andalusia hits 40°C and the locals all leave for the coast.
Practical tips
- Spanish dinner is from 21:00, adjust your lunch plans accordingly
- Pack a light scarf or shawl for cathedrals (Portuguese and Spanish ones expect shoulders covered)
- Buy port directly from the Porto cellars if you want to bring some home, much cheaper than airport duty-free
- The Algarve is the easiest "beach day" of any European Grand Tour
