The two tours we get asked to compare more than any others are the Grand Tour of Europe (a multi-country sweep from London or Paris through to Rome) and the Classic Italy tour (eight to ten days, Rome to Venice via Florence). Different shapes, different feels, and the right one for you depends almost entirely on what you want the trip to do.

What the Grand Tour gives you
You see Europe, not a slice of it. London or Paris on day one, the Swiss Alps midway, Venice or Rome at the end. Each city is two nights (sometimes one) so the rhythm is faster. You'll wake up in a different country every few mornings and the coach becomes a kind of moving lounge between cities.
For a first-time visitor who wants to "see Europe" in a single trip, this is the unbeatable shape. You won't dig deep into any one place, but you'll come home with a real sense of how France differs from Switzerland from Italy.
What Classic Italy gives you
Depth. Three nights in Rome, two in Florence, two in Venice, you actually live in those cities for a few days each. You eat at the same trattoria twice. You learn which gelateria is real and which is the tourist trap. You walk to dinner.
The price-per-day question
Grand Tour at R52,000 over 17 days = roughly R3,100 per day. Classic Italy at R28,000 over 9 days = roughly R3,100 per day. They cost the same per night on the ground. The Grand Tour's total is bigger because you're on tour longer, not because Europamundo is charging more per day.
Where the costs really diverge is flights. JHB to Rome non-stop is occasionally on Emirates/Qatar and tends to run R14,000 to R18,000 economy return. London hub flights run R12,000 to R16,000. Multi-country tours sometimes need an open-jaw ticket (fly into London, out of Rome) which can add R1,500 to R3,000.
For a first-timer, which?
Two rules of thumb we use after thousands of bookings:
- If you've got more than 16 days available and the budget can stretch, Grand Tour. You won't be back in Europe for another two or three years, so cover ground.
- If you've got 10 to 14 days or a tighter budget, Classic Italy. You'll come home with deeper memories. Italy on its own is a complete trip; it doesn't feel like a sampler.
Most South African travellers who do Classic Italy first end up doing the Grand Tour two years later. Most who do Grand Tour first say "we should go back to Italy properly". Either order works.
