Egypt is having a moment. The new Grand Egyptian Museum opened in 2025, the Sphinx complex got a major refresh, and direct flights from JHB to Cairo via partner airlines have made it dramatically easier. The two main tour options for South Africans are the Egypt-only land tour (Cairo, Alexandria, Luxor, Aswan by road and air) and the Egypt + Nile cruise tour, which adds 3 or 4 nights on the river between Luxor and Aswan.

Land tour: the efficient option
Eight to nine days, mostly Cairo-based with a flight down to Luxor and Aswan to see the southern temples (Karnak, Valley of the Kings, Abu Simbel as an optional excursion). You sleep in good hotels every night. You're on solid ground. You see the Pyramids, the Sphinx, the new museum, the Khan El Khalili bazaar, and the southern temple complexes, basically the full highlight reel.
Cruise tour: the immersive option
You get everything the land tour offers, plus 3 or 4 nights on a Nile cruise vessel that sails between Luxor and Aswan, stopping at temples each morning that other tours miss: Edfu (Temple of Horus), Kom Ombo (crocodile temple), Esna. You eat all meals on board. You watch the Nile go past from the deck.
What's the cruise actually like?
Honestly? More relaxing than people expect. Vessels are 80 to 120 cabins, river-style (not ocean cruise scale). Cabins are simple but air-conditioned with private bathroom. Daytime: morning excursions to a temple, afternoon sailing with views from the sun deck. Evenings: dinner, sometimes a Nubian dance show, early to bed because the next morning's temple visit starts at 7am.
If you've done river cruising in Europe (Rhine, Danube), the Nile is similar in vibe but with significantly more elaborate temple-stop entertainment.
The price gap
R9,500 more for the cruise version. You get 3 to 4 extra nights, full board (no out-of-pocket dining), three extra temple visits, and the river experience. On a value-per-day basis the cruise actually works out cheaper because all meals are included.
Climate caveat
October to April is the best window for either tour. May to September is brutally hot in Luxor (40 to 45°C). The cruise is harder to handle in summer heat because excursion times can't be moved earlier in the day enough.
Verdict
If you can swing the extra days and budget, the cruise is the standout choice. Three thousand-year-old temples plus three nights drifting on the Nile is a more complete Egypt than the land tour alone. If your leave or budget is tight, the land tour still includes the headline sights and is excellent.
